Intro To Hard Ice

Course Summary:

This is a unique and challenging 4 day course to introduce you to basic technical skills and provides a foundation for those who both want to generally be safe traveling on Hard Ice and possibly start a career as professional Hard Ice Guides.

This course will cover all the technical components that will be assessed during AIMG (Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides) Hard Ice 1 course / exam. Also, this course is taught by an official AIMG Hard Ice instructor so we make sure you have all you need if you decide to enter the official glacier guiding path of the AIMG.

Signing up for this course will also give students access to training videos that will cover topics like crevasse rescue, abseiling, and ascending. Following the successful completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to shadow a Glacier Adventure professional guide during a tour with clients.

Who is this course for?

This course can serve both those who want to learn more about recognizing and managing hazards on glaciated terrain as well as those who are potentially interested in the glacier guiding career path.

This course is taught by AIMG instructors and covers all the technical components that will be assessed on Hard Ice 1 (Jökla 1).

For those students who want to enter the AIMG professional Hard Ice guiding track, they will need to take the AIMG Hard Ice 1 (Jökla 1) course and receive a “PASS” following the completion of the “Intro to Hard Ice” course. Please make sure to ask any questions you may have about this prior to signing up for the course.

Basic rope systems

Route selection

Communication with client

Group management

Crevasse rescueIce

Ice Climbing (Top Rope) and Intro to Top Down (Lowering)

PREREQUISITES TO THE COURSE:

It is recommended that students who are interested to participate in the course have some experience with backcountry skills and a good level of fitness.

 

STUDENT FEEDBACK:

Participants will be given individual feedback both during the course and also following the course with recommendations for what to improve upon if one desires to enter the professional guiding field.

 

GEAR REQUIREMENTS:

When you sign up for the course you will receive a list of required gear; however, you will be able to rent all the required gear (a full kit) including boots for 5,000ISK. Please make sure to let us know what gear you will need for the course or if you will be renting a kit.
