A Beautiful Autumn Day

Decorative image

The fall in Iceland can be breathtaking. One beautiful day in October we drove on our way to the glacier where we do most of our tours. The scenery took our breath away.

“Autumn paints in colors that summer has never seen”

Enjoy the pictures.

Wild Icelandic black crowberries

Most Icelanders like the activity of going out to the country to pick berries, we love it. Picking berries or “berjamó” as we say is a part of the things we do in late summer and beginning of the autumn.

The Icelandic crowberries are very delicious with our famous Icelandic skyr. They are also used for jellies, juices, and wine. Many of us like to sit and relax in the beautiful nature, pick berries and eat them while enjoying the tranquillity.

Öræfajökull is an ice-covered volcano located in the southern part of Vatnajökull. Öræfajökull has erupted twice in historical time. In 1362 when the district of Little-Hérað or Little-Shire, now known as Öræfi was destroyed, it was the largest historical explosive eruption. A smaller eruption was in 1727.  Both eruptions were accompanied by major floods, tephra falls and fatalities.

The top of Öræfajökull is a crater, 4 km wide and filled with ice. Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest peak in Iceland is located on the northwestern side of the crater. The summit of Hvannadalshnjúkur is 2110 meters high.

Small outlet glaciers extend down the furrowed flanks of the mountain. The biggest once are  Svínafellsjökull, Falljökull, Kvíárjökull, and Fjallsjökull.
