OVERVIEW

Level Up Your Aerial Photography with @h0rdur

Join local professional photographer Hörður Kristleifsson for a one-day photo workshop focused on aerial photography. Each single-day workshop provides door-to-door pickup and drop-off from your lodging in either Hali or Höfn. We map out each day by assessing morning wind speed, precipitation, and cloud density to locate the best possible photography conditions across Southeast Iceland. This adaptable workflow is the best way to handle shifting Icelandic weather, ensuring your day in the field is a completely personalized shooting experience.

Our regional specialization gives us immediate access to a wide variety of glacial outlets, black-sand beaches, coastal mountains, and hidden waterfalls. By adjusting our track in real time, we place you in the right locations when the elements align.

Why Join This Workshop?

  • For Every Pilot: Whether you just bought your first drone or have been flying for years, the workshop is open to all skill levels. Hörður will tailor his instruction to your specific experience level.

Note: Images displayed for our workshops show potential locations only. To prioritize the best light and conditions, our final route remains flexible. Because Icelandic weather is unpredictable, not all visited locations are pictured, and not all pictured locations are guaranteed. This adaptable approach is necessary to ensure we are always in the right place at the right time.

Meet your guide!

Hörður Kristleifsson is a photographer specializing in aerial photography. Born and raised in Iceland, the Arctic is more than just a destination for him; it is his heritage and his home.

Through his work, Hörður collaborates with DJI, the global leader in drones. Working on their product launches and campaigns allows him to put the latest tech to the ultimate test in Iceland’s harsh conditions. This insider experience keeps him at the forefront of the industry, enabling him to teach the most current and effective techniques for the modern aerial photographer.

Over the years, he has flown more than 30,000 kilometers across multiple drones, flying through everything from active volcanic eruptions to the notorious Icelandic highland winds, encountering virtually every flight condition imaginable. For workshop participants, this means having a guide who knows exactly how to handle the elements, keeping gear safe while helping to capture the shot of a lifetime.

As an instructor, Hörður prides himself on a down-to-earth teaching style. His passion lies in making advanced drone techniques accessible to everyone, while also sharing Iceland’s deep history and the stories behind the landscapes visited.

Itinerary

Icelandic weather and daylight change completely from season to season, so we keep our schedule completely flexible. For most participants, this workshop operates on a standard morning pickup and evening drop-off schedule. However, because light is everything, we fully customize the start time to align with the best shooting conditions. In the summer months, this means we can easily run overnight trips to capture the midnight sun.

This is a private 8-hour field itinerary tailored entirely to your pace, skill level, and goals.

    • Pickup & Strategy Briefing: We pick you up directly from your hotel or guesthouse around Hali or Höfn. Before we drive out, we do a final check of live wind sensors and cloud coverage maps together to finalize our route based on the day’s conditions.
    • On-Site Instruction: We spend our field hours moving between the stunning landscapes that Southeast Iceland has to offer. Braided rivers, glaciers, coastal peaks, canyons, waterfalls, and more. Hörður works with you live while you fly, focusing on camera settings for drone photography, technical aspects, reading the landscapes, and composition.
    • Casual Food & Coffee Breaks: We adapt our dining stop entirely to how the shooting conditions are flowing. We will pause at a local café for a hot meal or grab food to go to keep our transit times short if the weather window is tight.
    • Final Location Push: We utilize the final hours of our session to push deeper into our target territory, capturing our final aerial perspectives and top-down frames before starting the return drive.
    • Return Drop-off: We drive you right back to your accommodation around Hali or Höfn, leaving you with memory cards packed with amazing aerial footage.

What's Included?

  • Professional Instruction: You will have full-time guidance from aerial landscape photographer and licensed drone pilot Hörður Kristleifsson (@h0rdur).
  • Transport: Full 8 hours of private transport in a modified 4×4 vehicle suited for Icelandic terrain.
  • Pickup: Custom hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in the Hali or Höfn areas.
  • Guaranteed Power: Continuous on-board battery charging infrastructure for drones, cameras, and laptops.

What's Not Included?

  • Flights to / from Iceland.
  • Food, drinks, and lunch stops during the tour.
  • Personal drone or camera equipment.
  • Personal travel insurance and equipment insurance (for your drone/camera gear) is highly recommended.
  • Accommodation before or after the tour.

Experience Level?

Our workshops are open to any experience level. Because we work with small groups, the pace and level can be adapted to each individual participant. Whether you are completely new to flying drones or have many years of experience, you will be supported at your own level.

Hörður brings deep technical and creative expertise and can adapt instruction and guidance to each person’s needs in the group. The workshop is equally suited for beginners who want to build a strong foundation and for experienced photographers looking to refine their skills.

Our goal is to create a safe, flexible, and inspiring learning environment where everyone can progress confidently.

Why Join This Workshop?

Learn from a Pro: Master drone photography and post-processing workflows.

Travel with a Local: Experience the history, geology, and hidden gems of Iceland.

Fly with Confidence: Gain the skills to fly safely in challenging conditions on a stress-free trip focusing on great company and beautiful landscapes.

Know how to read Iceland: We chase the light, adapt to the elements, and find unique compositions that others miss.

Our pickup and departure times are completely flexible and customized around your schedule, your goals, and the shifting Arctic seasons:

  • Darker Winter Months: Daylight is brief. We plan our 8-hour window carefully to ensure we catch both the sunrise and the sunset within it. Depending on cloud cover and solar activity, we can also adjust the schedule to track the northern lights.
  • Summer Months: Daylight is continuous. To capture the best possible light, we can run this tour as an overnight trip during the midnight sun. This allows us to shoot the low-angle sunset around midnight and the sunrise around 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM, while completely bypassing the daytime tour bus crowds at major locations. Timing is fully customizable and tailored to your photography focus.

Our operational schedule always revolves around chasing the cleanest light conditions. Because this trip is fully private, the final pickup time is completely up to you. Fill out our booking form with your preferred dates, and we will coordinate the perfect start time for you.

No matter where you’re going in Iceland, it’s important to choose the right clothing and dress according to the weather. We strongly recommend dressing in layers so it’s easy to add or remove clothing as conditions change.

Mandatory Clothing & Footwear:

  • Good waterproof shoes with ankle support (hiking boots)
  • Thermal underwear
  • Wool or fleece thermal mid-layer
  • Hiking pants
  • Waterproof pants and jacket
  • Warm gloves and hat (photography gloves or touchscreen-supported gloves)
  • Socks (wool or synthetic)
  • Sunglasses
  • Reusable water bottle

Your equipment needs to be prepared for challenging environments to maximize your flight time and keep your files secure.

Required Drone Equipment:

  • Primary Drone: A drone suitable for aerial photography in all weather conditions
  • Batteries: At least 3 spare batteries for your drone, though more is better
  • Spares & Essentials: Spare propellers and all charging equipment for your batteries, controller, and accessories
  • Storage: Extra memory cards for your drone
  • A Backup Drone: Accidents can happen. If you own two drones, bring both

Camera & Editing Equipment:

  • Ground Gear: DSLR or mirrorless camera for ground-level shots, along with a sturdy tripod. Although not required, if you own a camera, definitely bring it.
  • Filters: ND filters for your drone and camera if you’d like to shoot long exposures or videos
  • Laptop/Tablet: Laptop or tablet for image review and editing
  • Software: Adobe Lightroom Classic or similar photo-editing software, which is required for group review and editing sessions
  • Data Redundancy: Card reader and necessary cables for data transfer, along with an external hard drive or SSD for backups
  • Maintenance: Microfiber cloths and rocket blowers for dust cleaning.

Iceland has unpredictable and strong winds. To ensure you can capture the best footage in all conditions, we strongly recommend bringing a drone with high wind resistance, such as the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, Mavic 4 Pro, or the DJI Air 3 and 3S.

Hörður currently flies the DJI Mavic 4 Pro paired with the RC Pro 2. If you are looking to upgrade your current drone, we have a contact at the DJI Reykjavík store. They price-match to European retail prices, and as a visitor, you also get a 14% tax refund at the airport. This combination means you can buy a drone here for significantly less than in the US or Europe, saving up to $500 depending on the model.

A Note on Mini Drones: If you only have a sub-250g drone like the DJI Mini series, please be prepared to fly less, as Icelandic winds can overpower smaller frames. On top of that, the Mini drones from DJI are software-limited to 120 meters (394 feet), which can be very limiting when flying in mountainous areas. Strongly consider upgrading before the trip or buying locally upon arrival. Regardless of your drone choice, always consider bringing your DSLR or mirrorless camera as a backup for ground-level shots.

  • Glacier Adventure reserves the right to always keep a 5% payment fee to cover costs for the booking & rescheduling.

  • Cancellations received less than 24 hours before tour departure, will not be refunded. This includes bookings made within 24 hours before departure.

  • If clients cancel their tour more than 24 hours before departure, a 95% refund will be given.

  • “No Shows” will not be refunded if the client is not on time before the tour departure.

  • Glacier Adventure reserves the right to cancel your trip with your safety in mind.

  • With short notice, the tours can be canceled due to safety reasons or other natural conditions. In such cases, a 100% refund is provided.

Note: We don’t refund if the client is late or doesn’t show up, or if the weather is not good and the tour is still on schedule. We recommend that participants stay in a hotel or guesthouse close to Hali the night before the tour.

Weather in Iceland is part of the experience. While poor conditions may occasionally limit flying, they often create the most dramatic photographic opportunities. However, if the forecast calls for severe weather alerts, road closures, or extreme wind speeds that make driving or flying completely unsafe, we will notify you immediately. In the event that we must cancel the day trip for safety reasons, you will receive a full 100% refund. Please review our full terms for our 24-hour client cancellation policies.

Yes, of course! This workshop is highly focused on photography, often involving long hours in the field and a "chasing the light" mentality. Non-photographers are welcome to join and enjoy the scenery, provided they are comfortable with our dedicated photography schedule.

Yes. We have on-board DJI Power portable charging stations so you can charge batteries and laptops while we move.
